Right now, many are reminding fans that official merch from the Harry Potter series leads into further profit for J.K. Rowling so it’s important to focus our energy and money on fan made stuff!

We shouldn’t be supporting official merch from the Harry Potter series for a couple of reasons, mainly that it eventually leads to more profit for J.K. Rowling. With her constant doubling down on transphobic rhetoric, we have a duty as fans of the series and allies to the trans community to stand up and make it clear that we do not support her.

But putting a blanket term of “all” Harry Potter merch over it means that there are fans who are creating merchandise that are not getting the proper recognition and attention they deserve. So, if you want to buy something that honors the series, the best option is definitely to look into merchandise made by fans. Especially fans from the LGBTQ+ community.

For many, it’s a hard world to navigate because fans who have been creating merch and creating fanart for this series for years are now thrown into a precarious situation since Rowling revealed her true stance.

And, honestly, it has hindered a love for many fans throughout the world. But getting to support artists who are creating things inspired by the series rather than giving that money to Rowling by buying official merch would.

Sure, it isn’t an instantaneous thing but the more merchandise that is purchased through official means is more profit for Warner Brothers which then sees the series as profitable to further their connection with J.K. Rowling.
