Jurnee Smollett, who killed it as Black Canary in DC’s Birds of Prey, is totally onboard to return for a sequel.

DC’s Birds of Prey is one of the few 2020 movies that got a theatrical run before the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) health crisis brought the industry to a grinding halt. And although the film was met with backlash — mostly from fanboys who didn’t enjoy the female-fronted narrative written for and by women — it was also met with tons of praise from the very audience it was created for.

Since then, a sequel has been discussed but largely remains up in the air. The film left things open-ended enough to continue Harley’s story, or even dive into one of the other ladies’ narratives, and many fans have even expressed the desire to see Poison Ivy appear in a second film.

As it turns out, Black Canary actress Jurnee Smollett is totally onboard to return for a second installment. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly during a Comic-Con@Home panel, Smollett recounted how much she enjoyed tackling this DC heroine, and expressed she’d jump at the opportunity to do so again.

“It’s no secret how much I loved playing Black Canary, and [I was] so honored to take on that mantle,” Smollett said. “I would absolutely do it again if given a chance.”

Smollett’s not the only one who’d love to see her Black Canary grace the big screen either. Although DC fans have gotten one rendition of the character through the Arrowverse’s Sara Lance, there’s no denying Smollett’s rendition of the heroine brings a fresh perspective to the role. Not only does she actually embrace the supernatural power Black Canary is meant to have, but she adds some much-needed diversity to the DCEU.
