J.K. Rowling cannot seem to stop talking about being a TERF

Seeing J.K. Rowling continue to express her views on the trans community and not understand why many are upset with her is incredibly difficult.

It’s incredibly hard right now to think about the Harry Potter series in a positive light and most all of that comes at the hands of J.K. Rowling. The famed children’s author continues to use her platform to share transphobic rhetoric.

In a personal blog post, the author expressed that her own trauma and abuse as a woman should all but allow her to have these views on trans women and men and…that’s not how it should be at all. Rowling, who seems to have taken offensive to be referred to as a TERF, is woefully misunderstanding the upset that many have with the rhetoric she’s sharing.

But instead of having an open and honest conversation about everything and understanding where many are coming from in their upset over her words, Rowling instead keeps doubling down on her own opinion and pointing out that she’s well-researched.

Being well-researched doesn’t mean anything if you’re not willing to listen to active members of the community about their experiences. It’s very disheartening to see a children’s author who is so set on not listening to others and teaching of acceptance and empathy.

To be quite honest, we’re right to be mad as fans of the Harry Potter series because something that means a lot to us now feels tarnished. Something we’ve come to appreciate and look to for guidance was fed to us by someone who undervalues certain human beings for her own views.

It’s upsetting and we’re allowed to be upset. My thoughts go out to those in the trans community hurt by Rowling’s stance.
