Everything’s Gonna Be Okay

How this hilarious Freeform sitcom has flown under the radar for so long is beyond us. Created by and starring Australian comedian Josh Thomas, the series centers around Thomas’ character Nicholas, a free spirit who assumes custody of his two teenage half-sisters, Matilda and Genevieve, following the death of their father.

The series sparkles the most when Nicholas, still finding a way to be an adult himself, tries to help guide his younger siblings in their day to day lives. Matilda, who is a character on the autism spectrum — played by actress Kayla Cromer, who is on the autism spectrum herself — routinely steals the show with her matter-of-fact yet optimistic outlook on the world. Actress Maeve Press rounds out the trio as Genevieve, a socially awkward teen who is prone to fits of rage.

While the family members themselves are dysfunctional and the situations they get themselves into are regularly quite funny, there is also a lot of heart at the center of the show. Each of the characters deal with the death of their father in their own way, but they are always supported by one another. This show comes off as an even more progressive Modern Family, with a dash of Absolutely Fabulous thanks to its queer main character.

Everything’s Gonna Be Okay is currently available for streaming on Hulu or the Freeform app.
