The Midnight Lie by Marie Rutkoski

Marie Rutkoski‘s The Midnight Lie — the first book in a series that goes by the same name — returns readers to the Winner’s Trilogy universe.

The romantic fantasy follows Nirrim, a girl with a dangerous secret. She keeps her head down and passes through life according to her low status.

For people like Nirrim, colors and sweets are forbidden and the tribunal rules are harsh. If you break a rule, you pay more than a tithe; you face consequences just as harsh as the rules. Punishment, however, has not kept crime from running rampant in The Ward, and pleasures are thin unless you’re the High Kith.

But when Nirrim meets Sid, the rules fly out the window. Sid is a traveler, and she’s as slick as they come. She convinces Nirrim to seek the magic the High Caste are rumored to have, but she warns Nirrim not to trust her. Travelers have secrets, too, and they lie just as much as anybody else — whether it’s to themselves or to other people.

The Midnight Lie is available now in print, audio, and e-format.
