FanSided 250: Marvel, Star Wars ranked among top movie fandoms of 2019

Marvel and Star Wars ranked among the top movie fandoms for this year’s FanSided 250, which makes sense given that 2019 was a big year for both.

The fandom rankings are in, and Marvel and Star Wars landed among the top fandoms on this year’s FanSided 250 list. In fact, Marvel was the number-one fandom overall — including sports fanbases — and Star Wars ranked number three among all fandoms and number two when it comes to entertainment fandoms. And while it’s no surprise that either franchise is so popular, the fact that 2019 was such a huge year for both of them likely played into their high rankings.

For Marvel, 2019 marked the end of Phase 4 and the release of Avengers: Endgame — arguably the biggest Avengers movie of all time. Fans said goodbye to Marvel icons, including Chris Evans’ Captain America, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, and even Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow (though she’ll be back for her own film in 2020).

Meanwhile, Star Wars is also building up to a big ending this year, with The Rise of Skywalker rounding out The Skywalker Saga later this month. We’ve been invested in this story since A New Hope came out back in 1977, and saying farewell to the franchise’s original characters isn’t going to be easy.

After 2019, both Marvel and Star Wars will be heading into very different futures. While Star Wars will take a hiatus from movies and focus on Disney Plus series over the next few years, Marvel will start building to a new Avengers-esque story — one that will mesh both old characters and new (though it’s hard to imagine how they’ll find a bigger threat than Thanos).

Hopefully, these two fandoms will continue ranking highly even in years to come. Though neither will see such huge installments anytime in the near future, their impact will remain with fans as we enter into the next decade — and the new phases that lay ahead for both franchises.
