On this year’s FanSided 250, Game of Thrones and Stranger Things took the top spots for television series fandoms — and are we really even surprised?
This year’s FanSided 250 showed us where our favorite films and movies fall in terms of popularity rankings, and it’s probably no surprise to anyone looking at the list that Game of Thrones and Stranger Things ranked highest for TV fandoms. Both had new seasons in 2019, and Game of Thrones wrapped up the series this year — meaning both have been a primary topic of conversation throughout 2019.
Even with its controversial last season, Game of Thrones has become a cultural phenomenon over the past decade, and its characters and storylines have stayed with viewers — and likely will well beyond the season 8 finale. Whether you’re House Stark, House Lannister, or House Targaryen, you’ll likely agree that
What’s more, this year also saw the approval of a Game of Thrones spin-off series based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood — meaning we aren’t done with the world of Westeros just yet. And with the fandom more alive than ever, that world will likely remain at the top of FanSided 250’s fandom list for some time.
Stranger Things fans, on the other hand, didn’t need to say goodbye to their favorite series (though they did say farewell to some fan-favorite characters this year). But the third season of Netflix’s hit original series was greeted with enthusiasm that was missing from the reactions to its second season, and it was nice to feel the magic of Hawkins once again.
And with Stranger Things fans’ excitement about the series reinvigorated, the fourth season is likely to create just as much hype when it finally arrives. Given that it begins filming in January, we could see the new episodes drop on the streaming platform late next year — meaning Stranger Things might find itself in the top TV fandoms of 2020 as well.
