The Toll by Neal Shusterman
Neal Shusterman is rounding out his Arc of a Scythe trilogy this month, with the final installment hitting shelves on November 5. The Toll will conclude the events of Scythe and Thunderhead, wrapping up a dystopian story that has become one of the most beloved in the young adult reading community.
Set in a world where humans have solved the problem of death, individuals called Scythes have taken on the responsibility of keeping the population under control. The first novel opens with Rowan and Citra, the series two main characters, reluctantly training to join the Scythedom — despite the fact that it’s the last thing either of them wants to do.
As they train and come to understand the way of the Scythes, the two have life-or-death obstacles thrown their way, leading them both down paths they never would have imagined for themselves. And with the cliffhanger Thunderhead left readers on, it’s questionable whether The Toll will hold a happy ending for either party.
Whatever fates Citra and Rowan meet during the final book, though, it’s likely Shusterman will deliver a satisfying ending to those who have been following this story since the beginning. And given how long The Toll is, they’ll have plenty of time to dive in and enjoy that satisyfing ending.
