Hot off its Broadway run, American Son is coming to Netflix with stars Kerry Washington, Jeremy Jordan, and Steven Pasquale!
The play that took Broadway by storm is now coming to Netflix, and the adaptation will star Kerry Washington, Steven Pasquale, Eugene Lee, and Jeremy Jordan. The four-person cast came to Broadway this last season and held such an impact, sharing in the fear that comes with the unknown and what it means to be stuck without anyone there to help you.
In an emotional teaser, Netflix shared the power that American Son has with audiences, along with the fear that Kendra (Washington) has now that her son is missing. Set in Florida, Kendra and Scott Connor (Steven Pasquale) must fight with the police officer Larkin (Jeremy Jordan) over worrying about their child and why their son hasn’t come home.
What is interesting about the way this is shot is that it very much feels like a production onstage. Almost all Broadway shows are shot for the Lincoln Center archives, and Netflix’s take on American Son feels almost like one of those recordings.
In the teaser, we can see that it seems to be just one set, Kendra frantically trying to find out where her son is, while Larkin isn’t exactly the most helpful. But still, the fear that Kendra has, the pain she feels at not knowing where her son is? That was powerful onstage and, if this teaser is any indication, it’s going to be powerful onscreen as well.
Poignant, moving, and emotional, American Son is ready to destroy us all and, hopefully, score her an award for this amazing performance. (Get it together, Tony Awards.) Either way, this is going to be a must-see, and we can’t wait!
