Viola Davis’ Alberta Ferretti gown

Viola Davis stunned Emmy ceremony attendees on the red carpet with her black-and-white Alberta Ferretti gown, which gave her a look that was equal parts classy and fierce as she made her appearance at the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards. Black and white dresses never seem to go out of style, and Davis wore this one well.

But in particular, viewers were excited about Davis’ choice of shoes. The How to Get Away With Murder actress began the evening with a pair of heels on the red carpet, but she quickly swapped those out in favor of a more comfortable option: a pair of metallic platform sneakers! It was a bold choice, but attendees and viewers lauded her decision to present the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series wearing comfortable footwear.

And if we’re being honest, Davis absolutely rocked the gown-and-sneakers look. With any luck, she’ll inspire more women to take up the style — because we know wandering the red carpet and Emmy floor in heels all night can’t be pleasant for everyone, and women should have another option.
