With only a few episodes left till the Project Runway Season 17 finale, the designers must think beyond a single garment to impress the judges this week.
This week’s Project Runway episode will leave one designer just short of the finale. While the season has been filled with twists, turns and thought provoking fashions, this week’s challenge shows the true future of fashion. Has the line between art and fashion been erased?
According to Bravo, this week’s Project Runway episode synopsis states: “It’s the last challenge to determine which four designers will move on to the finale; they must create their biggest and best looks as well as designing experimental art installations; with rapper Cardi B and Bergdorf Goodman’s Linda Fargo.”
The idea of fashion being art isn’t necessarily a new concept. Just look at the annual MET Gala. That entire fashion parade blurs the line of fashion, art and performance. Why shouldn’t Project Runway explore this topic more fully?
Still, this particular challenge could be problematic. There needs to be a balance between thought provoking and pure shock value. As seen in preview clips, a shocking theme doesn’t necessarily add to the conversation. There needs to be substance behind that first glance.
It is interesting that Cardi B is featured in this episode. Previously eliminated designer Venny got a huge boost to his career and fashion brand when Cardi B wore his coat. It would have been interesting to see him in this challenge with Cardi B as a judge.
Since this episode determines the final four designers in the finale, one designer should be a shoe-in. Bishme has been on a progressive arc. Even though his installation might be more subtle, he should make the finale.
In other preview videos, Sebastian seems to have a melt-down. Throughout the season, his looks have been amazing. It would be disheartening to see him fall just short of the finale.
Given Hester’s outrageousness throughout the season (and presumable favor by the judges), she should make it to the finale.
The last spot will be probably be between Garo and Tessa. If the judges are looking for a show, the edge goes to Garo. Given last week’s back-talking by Tessa, does she really deserve a spot in the finale?
