HBO period drama Gentleman Jack continues this week, as Lister and Ann deal with the fallout of the sudden marriage proposal she received.

In case you’ve forgotten, the recently widowed and slightly creepy-sounding Reverend Ainsworth has plans to marry Ann in the wake of his wife’s death. He and Ann have had some illicit relations in the past (shocker!) and he thinks this is the natural next step. And, for another woman, it might be.

But probably not for this one anymore. Even if appears she did really think about it for a hot second or two.

It doesn’t look like the two women are going to be free of Ann’s past just yet, though. At least not according to the episode synopsis – and thanks to that nosy neighbor who won’t leave well enough alone.

"The widowed Reverend Ainsworth arrives in Halifax, and with encouragement from Mrs. Priestley, sets his sights on Ann Walker. Aware that Ainsworth’s attentions are stirring up memories for her lover, Lister sets out to deal with the clergyman in her own inimitable manner. Meanwhile, Lister presses on with the transformation of her estate, but her ambitious plans threaten to lead her into trouble."

I’m sure that Lister will certainly be quite polite to this guy.

Particularly given that she seems to be really into the idea – which I’m not sure the show supports, or shown evidence for – that Ann was somehow coerced or forced into being with him.

Maybe Lister just really needs to believe that her girlfriend wouldn’t have ever really chosen to be with a man?
