17. Enchantress

The history of the Enchantress could have made her one of the richest characters in Suicide Squad. Sadly, the film never really went into her story as much as they could have. Sure, we got an overview of who she was, but even then it was little more than a token bit of back story about June Moon, the archaeologist that Enchantress has possessed.

What makes the lack of development for Enchantress so sad is they could have at least given us more of June’s own personality and story in order to make us care that she was possessed by an ancient goddess who is truly evil. But, even then, Suicide Squad never does that either. We basically get a glossed over story for both June and the Enchantress herself.

Enchantress comes off as this generic bad gal because we don’t ever really learn about her. We know she was once worshiped alongside her brother and then the humans turned on her. That is all we really know, though, because once she is truly in charge of June’s body she is almost always being quiet and creepy, only barking out orders as necessary.

It’s sad, because even with how little we got, we could see there was potential with this character. She was at one point a powerful, if evil, goddess. And even her appearance was fascinating and eye-catching. But in the end, Suicide Squad fails to deliver on the promise of the character, her potential powers, and even why the destruction of the world is more important than anything else. We aren’t even given a hint as to what she wants out of destroying everything, and that might be the saddest aspect of her character: she never had a chance to be an ultimate villain.
