Episode 8 of The Twilight Zone gives us an overwhelming sci-fi theme from the trailer alone, and honestly, we don’t know what to expect.
In our real-world dystopia, lack of equality and revoked rights seem like a dismal but all too common theme. With Alabama’s latest abortion ban, Georgia’s heartbeat bill, and every other similar bill that puts the rights of fetuses before pregnant people, the news cycle is a hellscape. And, our lives and rights are actively at risk. While the latest episode of The Twilight Zone appears to have an evergreen message, it seems more newsworthy at the moment. Weaving sci-fi and reality — because our current reality mirrors any tragic apocalyptic ghost story at this point — The Twilight Zone “Point of Origin” discusses how flimsy our independence is.
At least, part of the episodic trailer appears to comment on the fragility of rights, especially given the power structure of our government. In theme with the last few episodes, there’s no synopsis for “Point of Origin.” Although the teaser appears to nod to commentary on basic human autonomy (or even cybernetic autonomy), we could just be projecting. Given the current state of news and legislature, that might not be a far reach, though.
Regardless, we should prepare to delve deep into the human psyche again this week. Based on the brief teaser this week, episode 8 reads like a mystery minus the murder. However, if the captive women don’t find out their previous memories, the consequences could lend to a murder mystery-esque theme.
Given the ending of the trailer, we might see a break from the typical extraterrestrial visits. Instead, the parallel dimension could be visited by synthetic robotic people. While we’re admittedly pessimistic about humanity at the moment, we’re rooting for robo-gal’s team.
Something seems so fitting about the narrator, Jordan Peele, concluding the trailer with an ice cream cone in his hand. We’re still not sure what to expect this episode, and the lack of a synopsis before the episode is out only fuels the secrecy in a classic sci-fi way.
