It’s the event we’ve all been waiting for, yet dreading its arrival. We’ve made it to the Shadowhunters two-part finale – but will everyone make it out?
All good things must come to an end – even Shadowhunters. Fittingly, that’s the title of the season 3 finale. At least, the second part of it.
It came as a shock to fans when Freeform announced that the show would not come back for a season 4, but there was at least some comfort in the reveal that the finale would be more than twice as long as a normal episode.
The first hour is called “Alliance.” Here’s how Freeform sums up that portion:
"In the first part of the series finale, Clary comes up with a plan that will bring Shadowhunters and Downworlders together, as Alec struggles for a way to help Magnus."
With Jonathan in his true demonic, and now apparently blonde form, it’s going to be all hands, steles, fangs, and paws on deck to stop him. A bit of magic couldn’t hurt either, but that’s the tricky part.
Having sacrificed himself to Edom last week, Magnus is now trapped. But he might find some help from Lilith. After all, it was only Asmodeus that kept her from reigning over Edom. With him gone, she likely won’t want his heir hanging around, keeping her from her throne.
Plus, Magnus and Alec have a wedding to plan – has anyone stopped squealing yet? – so he’ll be extra motivated to escape.
All signs point to that wedding working out, including Freeform’s synopsis of the back half of the finale:
"In the second part of the series finale, Jonathan begins his reign of vengeful terror as the Shadowhunters try to find a way to stop him. With only one hope, Clary must make a sacrifice that could have long-lasting implications for all. Meanwhile, wedding bells are in the air for one special couple."
But that “sacrifice” is awful concerning. Could the writers kill off our heroine? It’s hard to imagine, but not totally out of the realm of possibility.
There is one last book tie-in the writers room could use, but no spoilers here, even just in theory.
