A lot is changing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Avengers: Endgame. Here’s what to expect now that the Infinity Saga is coming to a close.

Warning: This story contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame.

After 11 years and 22 movies altogether, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting ready for a major overhaul. There’s a reason the franchise’s latest film is called Endgame, and fans knew in their heart that some characters’ stories would definitely be coming to an end this time around.

The biggest hit to the MCU was the death of two original Avengers, Black Widow and Iron Man. Even Captain America was ready to throw in the towel, after going back in time to live his life with Peggy Carter. But Hawkeye, Thor and Hulk didn’t necessarily have plots that neatly wrapped up their storylines, which leaves their futures a little more open-ended.

Now that things have come to an end, one way or another, for the original Avengers, here’s what we can look forward to in future MCU movies.

Old (yet newer) characters will get sequels

The past few years brought us new characters who weren’t there from the very beginning like the original six. Following the second Avengers movie, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel all got solo movies of their own. It’s safe to say, these characters will all get sequels, and perhaps even three solo movies — just as Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor did.

Spider-Man: Far From Home, the sequel to Homecoming, is already coming out this July. And production on Doctor Strange 2 will likely begin soon.

The Guardians of the Galaxy (or Asgardians of the Galaxy?) are also due for a possible final movie, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to film next year when director James Gunn is done with Suicide Squad 2. Plus, Ant-Man and The Wasp (who shared a film of their own this year) will likely be due for a third film as well.

As a bonus, the fallen Black Widow will also (finally) be getting her own solo movie, which is rumored to be a prequel about her life as a Russian spy.

New characters will get movies

Marvel Studios has already got two completely new movies planned for the upcoming phases. The Eternals will be next up. Although no official release date has been scheduled just yet (Marvel hasn’t officially announced any movie’s date beyond Far From Home), the movie will begin shooting this year. The film will be another team-up movie, set to star Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani.

Another character, Shang-Chi, will also be coming to the big screen. The master of Kung Fu character was created by Jim Starlin (who also created Thanos), though there’s no word on when filming will begin.

The X-Men will finally join the MCU

With the deal between 21st Century Fox and Disney officially closed, Disney has acquired the licensing to characters in the X-Men, meaning we can finally have the heroes cross paths with the Avengers.

Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds will be continuing his role as the titular character, though the rest of the X-Men franchise is set to be rebooted following Dark Phoenix. Although, according to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, we shouldn’t expect to see them in movies anytime soon.

Marvel’s Disney+ series will be in the MCU canon

It’s not to say that The Defenders’ shows on Netflix weren’t part of the MCU canon, because they were. But there was never any crossover between shows like Jessica Jones and Daredevil into the wider movie world. The best Easter egg we saw from Marvel shows spilling over into the movies was with Avengers: Endgame, when Agent Carter’s Jarvis had a cameo in the scene with Tony and Howard Stark.

Now, there are promises that the upcoming Marvel shows on Disney+ will have more of an influence on the movies. Its live-action shows include a Hawkeye and Kate Bishop series, a Loki series, WandaVision, and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (which may deal with Sam Wilson becoming the new Captain America).
