Manchester Black returns to Supergirl – and he has company. Below is all the information you need on how to watch this week’s episode.

This is the problem with airing a network TV show on Sundays. Even though we’re two months into the new year, Supergirl has only aired three episodes in 2019, thanks to the Super Bowl, the Grammys, and the Oscars. As a result, the show has struggled a little to pick up the momentum it had before the midseason break.

On its own, last episode was a solid villain-of-the-week outing. Kara and J’onn teamed up on a potential kidnapping case, which turned out to be connected to the serial-killing alien that Alex and the DEO were tracking. Nia embraced her powers for the first time, and James and Lena officially broke up in a scene that would have felt abrupt if it hadn’t been inevitable. (In terms of Valentine’s Day episodes, season 2’s definitely takes the cake.)

Bookended by three weeks of hiatuses, however, “Menagerie” couldn’t help but underwhelm. The thematic and emotional heft that has made season 4 so gripping simply wasn’t there.

Hopefully, this week’s episode, titled “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice, and the American Way?”, will get things back on track. The premise alone is promising. Read the official synopsis here, courtesy of The CW:

"SUPERGIRL FACES OFF AGAINST THE ELITE — Manchester Black (guest star David Ajala) breaks out of prison with the help of his new team, The Elite, who are set on punishing the anti-alien forces. Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) pulls double duty as she tries to apprehend Manchester Black and his team as well as deal with a shocking new development with Ben Lockwood (Sam Witwer)."

Manchester Black appeared at the end of “Menagerie” to smuggle the titular symbiote-infected jewel thief out of jail. As the trailer for this week’s episode shows, Menagerie will be part of the Elite, the ruthless band of pro-alien vigilantes that Manchester is forming in response to the Children of Liberty. Frankly, I am skeptical about Menagerie’s prospects as a long-term villain; her introductory episode didn’t give her much of a personality, and the memory of Venom still looms too large.

Still, Manchester Black is always a welcome sight. And Ben Lockwood has lost none of his menace since being unmasked. The scenes between him and his son in prison were a highlight of “Menagerie,” putting a sinister spin on the familiar “hero seeks justice for his father” origin story (e.g. season 1 of The Flash).

Alexis Ostrander directs from a script by Eric Carrasco and Aadrita Mukerji.
