Nick Fury could lose his eye in the movie

Be careful who you trust, Fury — no matter how cute, cuddly, or cat-like they might appear to be. That’s right: it’s a common fan theory that Goose could be the reason Nick Fury lost his eye. Given Goose’s Flerken abilities, we’d say his eye is a minor injury and was probably just a warning strike from Carol’s protective pal. However, why would the Flerken attack Fury, especially when they seem to be friends in the Captain Marvel promo?

While the film draws a lot of inspiration from Kelly Sue DeConnick’s comic run, that doesn’t mean the movie won’t adopt new narratives. There wasn’t any tendril-led eye gouging in DeConnick’s run, but Carol’s Flerken friend has always been hyper-protective.

We know Fury wouldn’t intentionally harm Carol, Goose, or any of their friends. However, a Flerken could get a little frustrated if a Skrull-Fury tried to attack Carol or coerce her into an unsavory situation. While Carol can easily distinguish between Skrull imposters and the real people, Flerkens can’t. Well, at least the comics haven’t explicitly showed a Skrull-sleuthing Flerken yet.

If a Skrull-Fury attacked Carol, and Carol wasn’t conscious to stop Goose, Goose could preemptively attack the real Fury when he reemerges. Thinking the real Fury is actually a Skrull, Goose might accidentally drag his eye into one of the Flerken’s multiple pocket dimensions.

It’s an outlandish theory. In the multiple worlds of Skrulls, Kree, and nearly extinct Flerkens, it isn’t implausible. Regardless, if Goose is the cause of Fury’s injury, we hope they make up.
