The Farewell (TBA)

The Plot: Billi (Awkwafina), a Chinese-American, must travel back to China to visit her grandmother who has terminal cancer. The problem? The family has banded together to keep grandma in the dark about her illness and are setting up an impromptu wedding as a final farewell.

I’ve personally been a fan of director Lulu Wang for several years, after seeing her adorable debut feature Posthumous in 2014. That film, starring Britt Marling and Jack Huston, was a romantic dramedy about two people stuck in creative ruts coming together. It’s charming and sweet, and go watch it now. You won’t be sorry.

Since then, Wang has taken her time developing her next film, which people fell in love with at Sundance. The film is being described as an intimate and deeply personal family drama that gives lead Awkwafina a chance to show her range. The actress has been stealing scenes for the last year between her performances in Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians. (I recommend going back further and watching her dominate Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.)

In the wake of the success of Crazy Rich Asians, it’s fantastic that movies like The Farewell are receiving more attention. Lulu Wang deserves all the attention and I’m eager to see her next feature, which has been picked up by A24.
