Charmed

The what: The minute I say this is a reboot of the beloved early aughts’ fave, you’re going to keep scrolling. But hear me out. This version of Charmed may not be the absolute best witchy series out there (hat-tip to Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but feel-good it ain’t), but it’s totally not the worst.

The CW announced last year that they were making a reimagined version of the popular show, and reactions were mixed. It’s always dicey when networks try to come back around to something that folks loved so much, but this turn looks at the Charmed Ones through a more diverse and inclusive lens. The basic premise is the same, but this go around the sisters are women of color, and much, much more politically aware.

The feels: There’s something so soothing about knowing the world is going to be saved, without fail, at the end of the hour. Unlike other, higher brow, programming, we can always count on these sisters to save the day. The demon will be slayed, the spell will work as it should, and the scales of right and wrong will be balanced … until next week.

I really like that we count on these sisters to hug their way through these epic battles with mortal consequences. The entire show is built around the premise of “the power of three” and their magic only works if they, quite literally, stand together.

The deets: The first season of the reboot is currently airing on The CW, so you probably won’t be able to stream it for a while. But you can catch up on the first few episodes on the CW website and app. While most of the actors are of the fresh faced variety, you might recognize Sarah Jeffries from the Jennifer Lopez joint, Shades of Blue.
