Steven Universe

The what: Half human and half Gem, the title character is just now learning to save the universe with his newfound powers that generate from his bellybutton. Steven’s non-human side hails from the Crystal Gems, a race of magical beings who have tasked themselves with guarding the universe, and have adopted Steven as a “little brother” of sorts.

The feels:  The story is, at its most basic, a coming of age story. Steven starts to become aware of his own identity and where he fits in. He fosters a community and a place of belonging, and it is comforting to watch it play out on the screen, even if it seems an unlikely scenario in real life.

Aside from it’s the universal feelings of fitting in and self-discovery it fosters, it offers a sweet, relatable main character. He’s got pluck and grit, but he’s also the kind of soft it takes to learn from a new environment.

The deets: The first four seasons of Steven Universe are available on Hulu, and you can catch up on season 5 on CartoonNetwork.com.
