10 most essential episodes of Voltron: Legendary Defender
“The Blade of Marmora” (Season 2, Episode 8)
The next essential episode happens right after the crazy space mall adventure.
At this point in the series, Keith is still a mystery. We don’t know much about him. He also doesn’t know much about himself. Out of all the characters, he’s the one who undergoes an extensive character arc throughout the series, and it starts with traveling to the headquarters of the Blade of Marmora.
Upon arriving there, Keith gets in trouble for having a dagger in his possession; he claims he’s had it his entire life. Desperate to find answers to his questions, he submits himself to the Trials of Marmora. Keith has to fight his way out in order to learn more about his past. At one point, we see a vision of his old home on Earth as well as his father, so more pieces of the puzzle start to reveal themselves.
In order to gain their alliance, Keith eventually gives up the dagger. In doing so, the weapon activates and reveals its true form as a saber. This can only mean one thing: Keith is part Galra. It’s a brilliant revelation and adds more depth to Keith’s character. It also highlights the concept of Galran half-breeds, a detail that shows up again later on when Prince Lotor and his generals are introduced.
Additionally, the Blade of Marmora plays an important role in the series because it’s one of the first major allies in Team Voltron’s fight against Zarkon. It also plays an equally important role in Keith’s life — because he eventually joins the organization down the line.
