Wayward Son – Rainbow Rowell

Rainbow Rowell was already met with enthusiasm when she announced earlier this year that Carry On would be getting an unexpected sequel. That enthusiasm peaked when she informed fans that the release date for the sequel would be moved forward from 2020 to 2019.

Wayward Son, named in reference to the Kansas song, will throw readers back into the lives of Simon Snow and Baz. Though the two were once enemies, they winded up falling for one another during Carry On. They also managed to defeat a notoriously evil wizard and graduate from wizarding school, meaning that anything can really happen in the upcoming sequel.

An official synopsis for Wayward Son has yet to be released, though Rowell did share a Spotify playlist she created based off the novel. Whatever Simon and Baz get up to during this sequel, there are sure to be plenty of humorous and adorable moments between the two characters.

There’s also a chance Wayward Son will focus on Simon getting his magic back, as the loss of his powers played a major role in the ending of Carry On. If Simon doesn’t manage to reawaken his magic, Wayward Son could also focus on him learning to live without it.

Wayward Son doesn’t have a specific release date yet, though it’s probably safe to assume that the book will be published during the latter half of 2019. In the interim between now and then, fans will have plenty of time to speculate on the novel’s plot—and jam out to the amazing playlist the author put together.
