The White Walkers will win
There’s one final theory that Game of Thrones fans probably don’t want to believe, even if we know that it’s a totally plausible one: The White Walkers could win at the end of season 8. After all, we’ve been told time and time again: “If you think this has a happy ending, you haven’t been paying attention.”
Ramsay Bolton’s comment, along with others from George R.R. Martin and the writers of the show, have led some fans to believe that the HBO series will end with the White Walkers winning the Great War. We’ve seen what the Night King and his army are capable of, and it certainly seems like the series could go in this direction. It wouldn’t be the first time Game of Thrones took the untraditional route, breaking fans’ hearts in the process.
The final scene of the seventh season shows the Night King destroying the Wall from atop an undead Viserion, and the destruction the two caused is unstoppable. While Daenerys’ other dragons might be able to put up a fight against this duo, the rest of Westeros seems unprepared for such an attack. It was difficult for humans to fight the White Walkers before they had a dragon in their possession.
Still, we’ll hold out hope that our heroes can defeat the army of the dead. Perhaps Daenerys’ dragons or Melisandre will save the day, and maybe the Prince That Was Promised prophecy will come true. But even as we embrace this optimism, we’ll keep in mind that we might very well see an ending that includes the Night King sitting on the Iron Throne.
What theory do you see coming true during the final season of Game of Thrones?
