15 most memorable and overlooked films of 2018
Three Identical Strangers
I watched Three Identical Strangers last week and immediately knew it had to be on this list. The story is just so bonkers you’d almost expect it to be the premise of a fictional story, and yet it’s true. The film follows three men who, in 1980s New York, realize they are triplets separated at birth. Happy to be reunited and embraced by a public eager to consume their bizarre story things seem to be on the way up, until the brothers discover there’s more to their separation than they ever could have believed.
Director Tim Wardle lets the brothers tell their story without artifice — save a few actors recreating certain scenes. He understands this story is so completely wild that there’s no need to gild the lily. As the narrative unfolds, the wonder of their story quickly turns into anger and melancholy as the brothers hit a wall regarding answers for what happened to them.
It’s fun and games when the trio are discussing how similar they are, but once they begin to investigate each other’s differences, the true horrors start to reveal themselves. To say anything more threatens to ruin one of the year’s most astonishing documentaries.
