The Spy Who Dumped Me

This year saw plenty of movies that focused on female friendships, but none of them had the utter positivity that Susannah Fogel’s under-seen The Spy Who Dumped Me had. I’ve watched this film several times since its home video release, and it’s like watching a movie about my best friend and me, only with spies.

The plot follows Audrey (Mila Kunis), a Whole Foods cashier stuck in a rut that’s not helped by the fact that her boyfriend has recently dumped her. When it’s discovered that Audrey’s ex is a spy being sought out by both government organizations and a wealth of baddies, Audrey and her best friend Morgan (Kate McKinnon) end up taking a cross-country journey that puts their lives in danger.

Fogel co-writing the script is the reason why The Spy Who Dumped Me works so well. The interactions between Morgan and Audrey feel authentic in a way that’d be different if a man wrote it. The action is never diminished by the fact that women are at the helm.

In fact, much of Fogel’s cinematography is on par with some of the best action scenes this year. I defy anyone to not watch how this movie presents a car chase and be simultaneously dazzled by the fluidity and tickled by the action.
