NIGHTFLYERS — “The Abyss Stares Back” Episode 103 — Pictured: David Ajala as Roy Eris — (Photo by: Jonathan Hession/Syfy)

Roy’s eyes

After the spores of baby Skye were released into the hospital wing, Tessia and Roy are trapped in quarantine. They can’t get out, naturally, but they still have to try and find a way to get rid of them without their imminent deaths, like what happened to the doctor who was helping Tessia give birth.

Maybe Roy doesn’t know for certain what would happen to him when he makes the call; maybe he assumed that, like Tessia, he would die. All the same, he calls for the computer system to cleanse the room, expecting that all living organisms inside would perish. Why then, when the smoke clears, is Roy still standing but with mechanical eyes in place of his normally brown ones?

The only thing that makes sense is that Roy is more part of the ship than we originally thought. We know he can see everything and transport himself anywhere in the ship — but not as a full human being. He starves himself of touch. So why did Melantha not realize there was something off about him during all those nights she spent with him? Is he unaware of his ability to withstand the power inside the room?

Throughout the entire series to this point, we thought we knew Roy. We believed that he was someone to trust as a captain looking out for the mission and his crew. Instead, he is either unaware of his true nature, or he’s been lying to everyone the entire time. Neither are particularly warming thoughts.
