Rowan and Tessia’s baby

When the baby is showing heart defects as the Nightflyer gets closer and closer to the volcryn, the doctor decides to induce Tessia’s labor. Unfortunately for Tessia and Rowan, their baby girl does not survive. We don’t know if the baby was destined to be stillborn — or if it was the doing of the volcryn and the ship getting closer to coming in contact with them.

After the baby dies, when Tessia is still holding her daughter in her arms, she looks down to suddenly see that the baby has begun to turn to dust, the spores entering the air. Karl screams for the room to be put in quarantine, but not before Rowan bangs on the door, trying to get into the room with the doctor, Roy, and Tessia even as the spores begin to take over.

The normal humans cannot see them; with special goggles, Rowan can see how many spores are in the room, and Agatha is the one who eventually sees what is happening. But the most terrifying part is looking at the baby that Rowan and Tessia clearly love so much and watching as she vanishes before their eyes, eventually leading to the death of Tessia and the doctor without anyone really understanding what is happening.

Did the spores affect anyone else as they tried to contain it? What exactly caused baby Skye to die so quickly when she was doing fine just the appointment before? Could it happen to anyone else onboard?
