Cynthia’s world

Cynthia begins to mess with the crew, convincing them all that they are making a mistake going to the volcryn and letting the volcryn probe into their ship. As a result, Lommie has to go into the ship to try and trap Cynthia away, in order to keep her out of Roy’s head and out of the ship itself. While in the system and searching for Cynthia’s castle, Lommie has to fight against a power system and an abusive man, hidden away in a room.

It is more psychological horror than anything, but the idea that Cynthia has this power and can easily bring on the destruction of the ship — or have it bend to whatever she wants — shows that really, no one is in control on Nightflyers. Even though Roy can see everything, he also has Cynthia in his head, telling him what she wants of the ship and how she doesn’t want them completing the mission.

Lommie, while in the system, learns that Cynthia can even manipulate her into thinking she’s back on the ship and that Melantha and Roy are talking to her, telling her things about their relationships and what is happening onboard.

Finally, Lommie can see what’s happening and manages to get out after trapping the older version of Cynthia in a room with her abusive father, but her mistake comes when she lets the younger incarnation of Cynthia go free to hide in the mansion. Later, that’ll cause more problems on the Nightflyer when it and its crew go to take on the volcryn.
