Skye and Karl’s hallway meeting

Karl leaves home for two years with the knowledge that he’s leaving his wife, Joy, alone. Their daughter, Skye, became sick right before he was set to leave and board the Nightflyer. Consequently, Karl continues to see Skye running about the ship, calling to him and trying to get him to help her rid the ship of the “cancer,” throughout the first few episodes.

He learns later that it is Cynthia, Roy’s mother, who is using images of Skye to get Karl to do what she wants. But it is terrifying to know that this ship, which promises a way for people to look at their memories, can use those memories against them.

Cynthia takes what is shared with her, finding ways to get what she wants out of those on the ship. But even as the ship gets closer to the volcryn, Skye finds ways of coming back into Karl’s life and making him second guess everything he is choosing to do, especially when the Skye closest to the volcryn tells him that she never died back home and that she is still waiting for him to come back to her.

The fear that comes with Karl and Skye’s relationship isn’t a terrifying fear that typically comes from horror movies — but rather the fear of losing someone close to you and not being able to have that closure. It’s the fear of being a parent, losing your child, and not knowing how to handle it.
