3. Incredibles 2

When it comes to long-awaited sequels, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is not alone this year. People have been clamoring for an Incredibles sequel ever since the first found wild success back in 2004. Now, 14 years later, Pixar-aka-Disney has finally delivered. The hype was clearly an effective marketing strategy in itself, as Incredibles 2 earned $608 million at the box office domestically and secured a place among some of Disney’s highest-grossing films to date.

And its success was not only financial; Incredibles 2 is by most accounts a fantastic movie. This time around Elastigirl gets the main spotlight, as she tries to use mass media to give superheroes a better name. Incredibles 2 also features a female villain, the tech-genius Evelyn Deavor, aka Screenslaver.

The themes of the evils of technology are fairly trite, to the point where they’ve almost become tiresome. Okay, we get it: kids these days are all glued to their phones, and that’s bad. And in many ways, the ongoing subplot of the legalization of superheroes isn’t played to the greatest effect it could be; for a movie set in an alternate reality of the ’60s, it’s lacking some depth in its themes.

Overall, Incredibles 2 is a solid movie and a worthy follow-up to its predecessor, though it doesn’t quite manage to live up to the novelty of the first. In some ways it could have managed to be more creative; nonetheless, it has more than earned its place on this list.
