1. Black Panther

It just feels right that Black Panther made the most unquestionable bank this year. Of all the movies on this list, Black Panther is one of the most original, relevant, and overall quality films to come out this year. Maybe it’s so hard to believe Black Panther came out less than a year ago because it was such an instant classic, filling a niche which has stood reprehensibly empty; it’s hard to believe it hasn’t already existed in the public consciousness for years. The fact that it’s taken a full decade since the launch of the MCU to finally launch a superhero movie with a hero of color is in itself a sign of how important Black Panther was. With its wild success, though, it’s hard to imagine more such films won’t follow.

The proof of Black Panther‘s triumph is in the numbers. Domestically, Black Panther swept the box office to end its run at $700 million. It is now both the highest domestic earning and the best reviewed Marvel movie to date. Globally, it came second only to Infinity War. Now that’s something to feel good about this year.

Black Panther has an inventive concept, beautiful set and costume design, a phenomenal cast, and a culturally relevant theme. It manages to create a world, which feels totally new and exciting while also slotting seamlessly into the MCU as a whole. It absolutely lives up to the hype, and will hopefully prove to large studios that a movie with a predominantly-black cast can still appeal to a wide audience and achieve dizzying success. With any luck, there will be many more such movies to come.  After Black Panthers earnings, Marvel will almost certainly be looking to replicate it. And with Ryan Coogler already signed on for the sequel, there will no doubt be more Black Panther awesomeness to come.
