Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

The second Lord of the Rings movie is much darker than the first as the band of hobbits, humans, wizards, and elves continue their journey to destroy the one ring to rule them all.

In one particular scene, upon seeing the wreckage and bodies of the Orcs that had captured Merry and Pippin, Viggio Mortensen’s character, Aragorn,  kicks a helmet in anger — thinking that the two hobbits were killed along with the creatures. Little did Mortensen know, the helmet was a lot heavier than he expected, thus resulting in him breaking two of his toes.

Additionally, the props department was unaware that this move was going to be happening, so they unfortunately did not make a helmet that was much lighter for him to send flying. The scream that he lets out after kicking the helmet is actually one of pain rather than anguish. Peter Jackson, the director, felt that the scream he let out really added to the character and felt very genuine so he kept it in the final cut. While we agree with this, it still makes us cringe to think that Mortensen had to break a couple bones in an effort to achieve that level of emotion.
