Midnight Cowboy

Midnight Cowboy tells the story of Joe Buck (played by Jon Voight), a diswasher who wants to move to New York in the hopes of a better life and the prospect of marrying rich. Soon realizing that this plan wouldn’t work, Joe meets Enrico “Ratso” Rizzo (played by Dustin Hoffman) who has similar dreams to Buck’s.

This unlikely pair soon form a strong bond and begin a hustling career together. As they walk along the streets of New York discussing their plans for making money, the two are nearly run over by a taxi. It turns out that the taxi driver was a real taxi driver and actually almost ran over Hoffman and Voight.

He wasn’t supposed to be on the set, so Hoffman decided that rather than have the take ruined, he should stay in character. This ended up being one of the most iconic scenes in cinematic history when Hoffman yelled out, “I’m walkin’ here!” while slamming his hand on the hood of the car. As they finish walking across the street, he continued his line and ad-libbed a little joke about how almost getting run over was another great way to get money.
