The Princess Bride

The Princess Bride is an amazing and classic movie that everyone needs to see. It’s filled with adventure, action, romance, and humor and drama. What many may not know, however, is that some of the action on the screen also occurred off screen.

In the scene where Prince Humperdink corners Buttercup and Westley as they try to run away together, Buttercup agrees to leave with the Prince in exchange for Westley’s safety. The prince agrees. However, he still knocks him out, captures, and tortures him to the point of almost dying.

According to Cary Elwes, he told Christopher Guest who plays Count Rugen (the prince’s right-hand man) that he could lightly tap him on the head for the knockout scene with the real sword rather than get a different sword with a rubber tip.

What the audience sees as Westly getting knocked out is actually also Cary getting knocked out for real. The next thing he knew, he woke up in the hospital and was getting stitches in his head. Fortunately, the injury wasn’t too serious and Elwes was back to work soon afterward, melting hearts all across the world with his signature saying, “As you wish.”
