The Eurovision Song Contest, Literally Any Year (1956-Present)

International song competition Eurovision is one of the greatest things in the world that the United States does not get to participate in. Many Americans probably don’t even know it exists. But it does, and it is incredible. It works like this: Each participating country (there are around 50) submits an original song to be performed live on TV, and then votes for other countries’ songs to determine the winner and crown them Europe’s best.

These songs are often epically terrible, and the performances range from the wacky to the political to the downright bizarre. There’s everything from glitter to animal puppets. It’s almost impossible to explain the scope and majesty of this event unless you just give it a try for yourself at least once. (Next year’s competition will be held in Tel Aviv, in May of 2019. Mark your calendars now.)

In fact, the only thing that could possibly make this experience better? If the Doctor were somehow involved.

Historical figures we might meet: You could probably craft a compelling story with almost any Eurovision contestant, given that many of the performances come complete with built-in backstories or political commentary. They also tend to lean toward the quirkier side, which seems a natural fit for any sort of Doctor Who story.

Potential adventures: There are so many ways the show could go with this setting. An otherworldly force could be trying to hijack the Eurovision broadcast for nefarious purposes. A contestant could turn out to be an alien. Team TARDIS could somehow be forced to perform. Anything is possible!
