Outlander season 4 episode 2 live stream: Watch online
Claire and Jamie continue to make friends and rile everyone up at Aunt Jocasta’s house in Outlander’s latest episode, “Do No Harm.”
We knew it was going to happen eventually. “Do No Harm,” the second episode of Outlander‘s fourth season, will see the series dealing directly with slavery once more. If you watched the third season and its awkward (to put it lightly) handling of race and slavery, you’ll know why my tone is so weary.
Outlander‘s slavery subplots last season were the televisual equivalent of a white person nervously explaining why racism is bad to a person of color: it presumably meant well but just ended up embarrassing everyone involved.
As “Do No Harm’s” synopsis — courtesy of IMDb — hints, Claire and Jamie’s progressive views on human rights land them in hot water when they arrive at his slave-owning aunt’s home:
"Claire and Jamie visit his Aunt Jocasta at her plantation, River Run. When tragedy strikes at the plantation, Jamie and Claire find themselves caught between what’s right and the law of the land."
The tension is confirmed in the episode promo when Claire announces, “I don’t agree with keeping people as property.” Looks like a showdown is a-brewing between Jamie’s beloved and his aunt (Maria Doyle Kennedy). But, judging from her defiant manner, I doubt Claire the White Savior is going to be changing Jocasta’s mind anytime soon.
Something I do expect: Jocasta realizing that Claire isn’t like the other women in 1767. “You are a peculiar lass,” she tells Claire. Since this is the 18th century and Jocasta has been widowed three times — all by men from the same family — and owns land, I’m willing to bet she’s been accused of witchcraft or foul play at least a couple of times.
Maybe the two ladies will bond over being independent women in a time when that’s not exactly a desirable thing. That might be the way to change Jocasta’s outlook on slavery — not Claire’s sanctimony. (Don’t get me wrong: slavery is and was abhorrent, but I don’t find Claire’s self-righteousness and historical snobbery half as heroic as she seems to.)
No matter what happens between Claire and Jocasta, one thing is for sure: our star-crossed lovers’ stay at River Run will be anything but relaxing. Their abolitionist ideology literally brings out the torches and pitchforks. Check it out in the promo:
