Doctor Who season 11 episode 6 live stream: Watch online

The brand-new season of Doctor Who continues this Sunday. Here’s everything you need to know to watch “Demons of the Punjab” online and not miss a minute.

Doctor Who journeys back to the past and finally gives its most underserved companion a story of her own this week.

Into every companion’s life must inevitably come the difficult lessons of time travel. Sure, it’s all wibbly wobbly good times until someone creates a paradox and destroys the world or irrevocably alters their own future.

This week, it appears that it may be Yaz’s turn to experience this particular story, as she visits her own grandmother during a particularly tumultuous time in 1940s India.

“Tread softly; you’re treading on your own history,” Thirteen warns Yaz in the teaser for this episode.

The official BBC synopsis describes the episode as follows.

"India, 1947. The Doctor and her friends arrive in the Punjab, as India is being torn apart. While Yaz attempts to discover her grandmother’s hidden history, the Doctor discovers demons haunting the land. Who are they, and what do they want?"

The idea of demons in Doctor Who is an intriguing one. The show has certainly never shied away from portraying varied and different religions – of both the alien and the human variety. And the Doctor has certainly run into a variety of dark creatures over the course of her multiple incarnations, including monsters who looked and sounded a lot like our popular conception of the Devil himself. (See also: The Beast in season 2’s “The Satan Pit,” and Azal during Third Doctor adventure “The Daemons.”) But the show has really never done a story about “demons” as we understand them.

It’s not entirely clear that’s what’s going to happen now, either. If anything, these supposed “demons” will probably also turn out to be just some other sort of alien creature who popped up in history and got mislabeled as something else. But it should be interesting to see how the framing of this particular cultural moment (the Partition of India) affects this idea.
