Boggarts: What do they tell us about the things that scare us most?
The boggarts help us face our fears but they are very irrationally based. What if we were face to face with the actual fears that humans are plagued with?
We have meet boggarts before, Lupin introduced them to Harry and his friends in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. That being said, all we really know about them is that you can face your irrational fears. Whether it is a shark, a snake, a spider, or, in the case of Harry Potter, a dementor, the boggart can be deflected by making it look ridiculous and you laughing at it.
So sure, they’re great for facing your fears but only those that don’t make sense. What about a very real fear of losing everything? Or what about the fear of death? Those are things you can’t face with a boggart and laugh about later on. There isn’t even a wizarding equivalent to fighting against human nature.
What if the boggarts could show us our real fears and we could laugh them away though? Would that be at all helpful? We’re human beings so, even at the end of the day, there is a nagging feeling of the unknown to us all. We don’t know what is going to come tomorrow or even within the next hour and a boggart is going to change that.
Sure, they can make us laugh at the idea of a shark in a ballet outfit but they’re not there to make us think we’re invincible or something like that.
You can see more of them in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Face your fear as the movie hits theaters this November 16! You don’t want to miss Newt and his friends trying to stop Grindelwald!
