Bridge of Clay – Markus Zusak

White backgrounds with pastel colors seem to be a cover trend this year, and Markus Zusak’s latest release has both of those. On top of that, the details woven into the book jacket represent pieces of the story and add something to analyze while staring at the stunning artwork on the cover of Bridge of Clay.

In Bridge of Clay, Zusak details the lives of the five Dunbar brothers, boys who raise one another with their own rules following the disappearance of their father. And as they grow up together, they discover and come to terms with the truths behind their father’s absence.

One of the boys, Clay, eventually decides to build a bridge. Through the creation of this bridge, he hopes to honor his family and his past — but, of course, such an undertaking isn’t easy. Through Clay’s character, Zusak explores the lengths human beings are willing to go to achieve their goals and what they’re willing to sacrifice in the process.
