A Reaper at the Gates – Sabaa Tahir

Sabaa Tahir’s An Ember in the Ashes series underwent cover changes prior to the release of its third installment, A Reaper at the GatesAnd while cover changes are often met with frustration from those who already own the books, it’s hard to find anything to complain about when it comes to this series.

In fact, as many fans have pointed out, the new covers emphasize the diversity present in this series, paving the way for non-white characters like Laia to appear more frequently on the front of bestsellers. And of course, Helene and Elias look fierce as ever, too. Sadly, our three main characters aren’t so confident in the story itself.

A Reaper at the Gates follows Laia, Elias, and Helene as the Nightbringer comes closer than ever to dominating their kingdom. By the end of this story, each of them has been broken in some fundamental way. The three will need to band together to defeat their enemy in the final installment, but after the events of this book, winning the war will still be a near-impossible feat.
