“Searchin’ My Soul”
The show: Ally McBeal
In a stroke of third wave genius, David E. Kelly gave us one of the most memorable feminist icons of a generation. Ally McBeal is the story of an eccentric female lawyer who’s woefully terrible at keeping her personal life in check.
But Ally isn’t your average romantic comedy heroine. She’s deeply neurotic, often slipping into her own world of fantasies and dancing babies. The best part about her, however, is that she’s completely self-aware about her quirks, and the show never makes apologies about who she is or tries to “fix” her. Instead, the writing keeps her weird and jumpy, and makes her feel like a fully fleshed out woman as a result.
Best of the best: “Searchin’ My Soul” (theme song)
Vonda Shepard performed a lot of music for the series over its seven-season run, but the most iconic of them all would have to be the title music. It became an anthem, of sorts, and even made its way into the show’s musical episode in season 3. The cast came together for the finale and sang their own version of the tune that gave the original a run for it’s money.
Best lyric(s):
“Oh I believe I am ready for what love has to bring
Got myself together, now I’m ready to sing
I’ve been searchin’ my soul tonight
I know there’s so much more to life”
