“Research Me Obsessively”

The show: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

This song comes from television’s only musical dramedy. It follows the comedically tragic (or tragically comedic) life of Rebecca Bunch. At the start of the series, Rebecca quits her successful job as an attorney after a happenstance reunion with an old high school boyfriend. She follows Josh across the country, from New York to West Covina, California, without any prompting from him.

Rebecca sings the songs of the female experience, and every single woman, ever, will find something to relate to in this show, and the music makes it so.

Best of the best: “Research Me Obsessively” (“Who’s the Cool Girl Josh is Dating?,” season 2)

Of course, this is totally subjective, but I find this particular ditty both topical and poignant. Performed as happening in Valencia’s and Rebecca’s collective imagination, it details her experience of meeting Josh’s pretty, blonde, and new girlfriend. Rebecca falls into a spiral, relentlessly researching this woman’s social media in an attempt to learn all about her “competition.” Totally relatable, right?

Best lyric(s):

“You know you want to look at my Instagram
But it’s private
So Google me until you find out where I went to high school
And then set up a fake Instagram account
Using the name and the photo
Of someone that went to my high school
And hope that I remember that person a little bit”
