“I’m Just a Bill”

The show: Schoolhouse Rock!

Many of us are far too young to remember seeing this show when it originally aired. But it left such an impression on the popular culture that it’s part of us now. Teachers and educators have been using clips from this handy little show for decades, and it’s solely because pretty much every song is such an earworm.

Schoolhouse Rock! first started airing in 1975 as part of the Saturday morning cartoon block that lasted until 1985. It got a reboot in the early 2000s, and some of the songs were revisited by popular artists in the 1990s.

Best of the best: “I’m Just A Bill” (1976)

It’s really hard to pick a favorite song from this collection of classics. They are all super valuable to me as a person and a former kid. I just picked this particular song because it’s the most recognizable. In fact, every single fact I know about the American legislation system is because I memorized this song as a young child.

Best (most informative) lyric(s):

“I’m just a bill
Yes I’m only a bill,
And I got as far as Capitol Hill.
Well, now I’m stuck in committee
And I’ll sit here and wait
While a few key Congressmen discuss and debate
Whether they should let me be a law.
How I hope and pray that they will,
But today I am still just a bill”
