“Females Are Strong As Hell”

The show: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Kimmy Schmidt is a woman who spent many, many years hiding in an underground bunker after her cult’s leader foresaw the end of the world. She spent a good part of her teens and twenties being held hostage with a handful of other women who fell victim to Richard Wayne Gary Wayne.

Although this show sounds like a real bummer, Lifetime-movie style, it’s really a ridiculous satire from the comedically genius mind of Tina Fey. The show follows Kimmy as she tries to re-enter society, discovering years and years of advancements she missed while she was sequestered in her bunker.

The best of the best: “Females Are Strong As Hell” (theme song)

The opening of every single episode of the series features a parody of all those YouTube remix videos that inevitably surface after a major online event. In this case, the major event is Kimmy’s rescue, and the song is sung by an onlooker reacting to the events unfolding right in front of him.

One quick Google search will reveal a dozen or more real videos of the same ilk, but seeing it parodied like this brings a certain kind of satisfaction. It also sets the tone for the show, which is completely farcical and outrageous, but also dear and sweet, just like the character of Kimmy herself.

Best lyric(s):

“I was outside cuttin up bike tires with my grandson
When out of nowhere
Forty hundred police vehicles came bookin

They went, busted up in that weird old white dude’s house
He had a cult up in there
White dudes hold the record for creepy crimes
But females are strong as hell”
