20 best original songs from TV, from The Simpsons to Empire

“Fade Into You”
The show: Nashville
This musical effort began on ABC and predates Empire by just a smidge. What the FOX show is doing for hip hop and R & B, Nashville did for country music. Its beautiful female lead stole the show as well, and Connie Britton’s hair put this show on the map. Well, okay. The music wasn’t bad either.
The show has since moved to CMT, lost Britton, and taken a turn for the incredibly soapy, all before coming to an end earlier this year. That’s all well and fine, but the music went that way as well. However, in those early seasons, some of the songs coming out every week were incredibly inspired and poignant. I’m partial to country music, generally, so I thoroughly enjoyed the soundtrack.
Best of the best: “Fade Into You” (“Someday You’ll Call My Name,” season 1)
As is the case for most for the music on the list, the idea of “best” is purely subjective. Like I said, that first season of Nashville churns out quality music in every episode, but nothing hit me in my heart parts like this particular song.
The song is performed by the characters Scarlett and Gunnar, who are dancing around a romantic relationship at the time. It’s slow and heartfelt, and I’ve never seen the two have more chemistry onscreen. I raced right to my phone and downloaded it from iTunes the minute I heard it.
Best lyric(s):
“If you were the ocean and I was the sun
If the day made me heavy and gravity won
If I was the red and you were the blue
I could just fade into you”
