Halloween is upon us and like most people, you’re probably scouring Netflix, Hulu, and more to find the right movies to scare yourself silly. Well, Culturess has you covered because for the next four weeks, we’ll be looking at various horror subgenres to find you just the right movies to fill your film-treat bag with some goodies. Each week will have a different theme, a movie you might like, and four recommendations similar to it. Think of it like Pandora for movies.

So, to kick things off, we’re starting at the beginning with classic horror films. Horror movies made before 1970 thrive on the dark and spooky, as opposed to the blood and gore. Movies of this time period hearkened back to the Gothic world of “old dark house” features, alongside the rise of the Universal monster movie and the ‘50s “creature feature.” The films here are all in black and white, but that allows for a pervading sense of atmosphere to take over. These movies won’t outright make you scream, but they will leave you questioning what’s hiding behind that door.
