Shaun of the Dead

The Plot

Shaun, the underwhelming every-man content to sleep-walk his way through the same old routine day in and day out ad infinitum, finds himself and his best friend trapped in the center of a massive zombie outbreak. Shaun now has to battle his way through the challenges he’d faced every day of his life—except now he has to do so while faced with ravening flesh eaters. He sets off to assemble all his loved ones in the pub they’ve frequented for years, where they can make a final stand against the hordes of the undead and then have a celebratory pint. Shenanigans occur.

The Breakdown

This movie turns zombie tropes on their head with an attention to detail that only comes from real love. Unlike some spoofs which seem to spend their entire run-time acerbically picking apart their source material, Shaun of the Dead both embraces the traditional zombie story while also poking fun at it. Both a fantastic zombie movie and a hilarious parody, the film will keep you laughing from beginning to end. The recurring gags crop up again and again, becoming funnier and more ridiculous every time. The characters are so caricatured that they once again become believable. It’s farcical, lovable, and above all, absolutely hilarious.

The Scare Factor

No, but scary funny. Other than the usual gross zombie gore there’s nothing here that would shock a person who’s seen virtually any zombie film; but its priceless twists on common horror tropes make this one a must-see come Halloween time.
