What We Do In The Shadows

The Plot

A documentary crew is invited into the home of four vampires living in Wellington, New Zealand, and struggling with all the hardships associated with being a modern day bloodsucker. From trying to get dressed for the club when your image doesn’t reflect in a mirror to dealing with that one roommate who never washes the blood off the dishes, What We Do In The Shadows digs in to all the petty drama of the vampiric community, but also the drama that any four sentient beings experience when trying to co-habit in a single flat. The results are absolutely side-splitting.

The Breakdown

A hilarious and utterly novel take on the vampire mythology, this movie’s documentary style helps emphasize the everyday nature of these underwhelming immortals’ lives. Packed with off-beat humor that plays off all the classic vampire tropes, you certainly don’t need to be a vampire fan to enjoy this film. What makes it so lovable are the characters themselves. From neurotic Viago to Vladislav “The Poker,” the characters are as bizarre as they are relatable. Plus, the movie stars Taika Waititi, who also wrote and directed it with co-star Jemaine Clement. If you’ve seen Thor Ragnarok, you have an idea of Waititi’s humor; What We Do In The Shadows is even zanier, even more unexpected, and of course, even funnier.

The Scare Factor

The only time you’re likely to scream is when you’re screaming with laughter. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for something in the Halloween spirit that will leave you smiling instead of shuddering.
