Between Wonder Woman 1984 and I Am the Night, 2019 is looking more and more like the year of Patty Jenkins and Chris Pine.
Why is it that January feels like the perfect time of year for a suspenseful historical thriller like I Am the Night, formerly known as One Day She’ll Darken? Is it because the dark nights lend a certain air of noir to watching a series like this? Or does the cold play a part, too? Either way, we know we’re ready for I Am the Night next January, and not just because Chris Pine is starring in a six-episode series from Patty Jenkins.
It’s also the fact that the case of the Black Dahlia is involved — and it looks like there are some strange things happening in the underbelly of Los Angeles. Check out that headgear we see from behind. It almost looks like devil’s horns, doesn’t it?
We’re not going to lie: Pine’s character, who according to Entertainment Weekly is named Jay Singletary, has a bit of the air of James T. Kirk about him, what with sleeping next to a woman while in a state of undress when we first see him in the trailer. But Kirk and Pine’s Steve Trevor, to make the practically-inevitable Wonder Woman reference, both have heroic streaks to them, and it looks like Jay will fit that mold as well.
But Pine isn’t the only actor we’re interested in here; India Eisley is playing the main character (or so we think), Fauna Hodel. She looks like she has an excellent blend of both an innocent and yet slightly off-putting aura, which seems about right for a series literally called I Am the Night.

Color us intrigued. Although Jenkins is only directing the pilot so far, it seems as though she may be involved in more episodes per TNT’s pressroom.
Here’s hoping she has the time to finish the series, because this first taste is … dare we say it … wonderful.
